A Plank in My Eye

by Joan on February 15, 2012

“Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?”  Matthew 7:3-4 (NIV)

While driving to work one day, a cell phone in my right hand and my left hand on the steering wheel, I came upon a line of slow moving cars. There wasn’t any reason for traffic to move slowly except the lead car was traveling around forty miles per hour.

“I don’t believe this,” I said to my husband on the other end of the phone. “This person has three cars delayed because they refuse to drive the speed limit.”  I couldn’t wait to find a passing zone on the rural farm-to-market road. Looking in the rear view mirror, I saw another fast moving car approach. “Make it four cars,” I said, as the car behind me accelerated and passed all four automobiles.

“What is he doing? That’s crazy! He’s in a no passing zone and near a hill. I hope he reaches his destination without killing himself or someone else.”

Less than two minutes later, I took the opportunity to pass; however, I was in another no passing zone and near an even steeper hill. I had been so quick to judge the other driver, and then I did something worse.

It caused me to think about times I’ve judged other Christians.  I have looked upon their sin as being worse than my own. After all, I’ve not committed murder, but at times, how many times have I been angry with a sister or brother in Christ?. I’ve never been guilty of armed robbery, but what about the paper clip I “borrowed” and never returned from my employer?

Jesus tells us only when we first take the plank out of our own eye, will we be able to see the speck in our brother’s eye.  I have come to realize there will always be planks in my eye. However unintentional, in my sinful nature, I will commit sin. Other Christians will sin, but through His grace we are forgiven.

Since that morning, I’ve seen that same slow moving automobile several times and I’m reminded to always remove the plank from my eye.

Worship

by Joan on February 14, 2012

What comes to your mind when you hear the word worship? Is it the praise and worship songs we sing? Is it sitting in quiet reverence of our Lord and Savior? Is it something done only during our devotional time?

Just as people have varying ideas of how best to worship the Lord, there are also thoughts on when to worship. Some think of it as something done on Sunday mornings, yet others feel they can (and do) worship the Lord anytime and anywhere. However, I have been guilty in thinking worship is something done during the “good times”.

In reading the book of Job, we get a different view of worship. Then Job arose and tore his robe and shaved his head and fell on the ground and worshiped. (Job 1:20)

Job worshipped—after he had lost his wealth and his children.  He recognized the giver and taker of life.  And he said, “Naked I came from my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return. The LORD gave, and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD.” (Job 1:21)

Worshipping our Lord is something we should do anywhere, anytime, in any situation. He is worthy.

A Time For Every Purpose

by Joan on February 8, 2012

For the past few weeks, I have had trouble writing. It seems as if thoughts and ideas will not come and when they do, I can’t seem to get the words on paper.

I shared this with a friend last week and she replied, “We all have seasons of being overworked or tired.  Sometimes we just need to rest in Him…Maybe He has something to say that won’t be heard unless you truly rest.”

Our current sermon series at church is on the book of Ecclesiastes. Solomon, the wisest man in history penned these words:

To everything there is a season, A time for every purpose under heaven: A time to be born, And a time to die; A time to plant,  And a time to pluck what is planted;  A time to kill,  And a time to heal; A time to break down, And a time to build up; A time to weep, And a time to laugh; A time to mourn, And a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, And a time to gather stones; A time to embrace, And a time to refrain from embracing; A time to gain, And a time to lose; A time to keep, And a time to throw away; A time to tear, And a time to sew; A time to keep silence, And a time to speak; A time to love, And a time to hate; A time of war, And a time of peace. (Ecclesiastes 3: 1-8, NKJV)

Are you in a particular season? Perhaps it is a time of mourning, a time of silence, a time for planting, or a time of harvest. If you are mourning, remember He turns our mourning into gladness (Psalm 30:11) If you are planting, there will come a time of harvest. If you are silent, and seek Him, He will give you words in His time, in His way. Rest in Him and His promises.

GPS

February 5, 2012

A few years ago, two friends and I attended an out of state writer’s conference. We decided that we could save money by driving and sharing travel expenses, so one friend volunteered to take her van. Before setting out on our 1500-mile journey, she programmed our destination into her GPS. My other friend brought her [...]

A Light To My Path

February 1, 2012

Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. (Psalm 119:105, ESV) I stepped outdoors to a cloudless winter night. The cold air was brisk and a full moon hung low in the eastern sky as I made my way toward the path leading to my brother’s house. With flashlight [...]

Weekend Reflections ~ His Grace

January 28, 2012

Scripture But he said to me,“My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. (2 Corinthians 12:9) Reflect Are you facing tough times? Is there a situation in your life [...]
