Sparrows

in Grace Café

Welcome to the Grace Café. I appreciate all who have linked here the past several weeks. I had intended to share more about my “adventure” last Saturday at the nature preserve and things God showed me through that experience. However, this has been an extremely busy week, and I have started co-leading a Beth Moore Bible study. If any of you have taken one of her studies, you know the homework is very in-depth. Therefore, I decided to share a devotional I wrote sometime back that was published in Granola Bar Devotions with the title “He Cares for You”. This happened to me about six years ago.

While driving to Bible study one evening, I cried out to the Lord, “Don’t you care?” A few days earlier, my husband suffered chest pains and required a visit to the emergency room. It turned out the pain was due to gastrointestinal problems and he was able to return home. However, we had to pay the hospital bill. Two years earlier, John lost his job and health insurance. With his history of cancer, obtaining coverage was not easy. He found employment, but no benefits. For two years, I prayed that God would provide him with insurance.

He doesn’t care. If He did, He would have already answered my prayer. If God promises to meet all our needs, why has He not provided for this? Honestly, I was angry with God.

I glanced over at my study book, Jennifer Rothschild’s Walking by Faith – Lessons Learned in the Dark. How could I attend a Bible study, talk to others about faith, and still doubt God?  Then, of all the scriptures containing affirmation of His love and care, the Lord brought to my mind Jesus’ words found in Matthew 10:29-31: “Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. But even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not, therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.”

I immediately repented of my doubt and anger. If God cares about the little sparrows, without doubt He cares for His children. I pulled in the driveway of my friend’s house just in time to see one of the study leaders walk through her front door. When I got out of the car and stepped on her porch, I saw a small bird lying near the front door. It had flown into her glass storm door and was not there when Vicki arrived only moments earlier. I knew God placed the little bird as a confirmation of His love for me.

He provided a way to pay the hospital bill. Through that experience, I learned to trust Jehovah Jireh—The Lord who provides. Today, John has a different job and insurance. God answered my prayer.

Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because He cares for you. (1 Peter 5:6-7, NIV)

I am glad you reposted this . . . as I missed it first time around.

    Fondly,
    Glenda

Thank you, Glenda. This was actually the first piece of writing I ever shared with anyone and was originally posted on my church blog.

I love how the Amplified Bible translates 1 Peter 5:7 -

“Casting the whole of your care [all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all] on Him, for He cares for you affectionately and cares about you watchfully.”

Praise God – He invites us to share it ALL with Him, and He listens to it. He cares for us so very much. If we just but knew…

Thanks for sharing this inspirational testimony to the faithfulness of God.

    GOD BLESS!

Sharon, yes I do like that translation. I often wonder if it hurts God when I doubt, when I know that He is faithful and has never foresaken me.

In “due” time God lifts up and provides. That one little word makes all the difference doesn’t it! Any earlier and our faith wouldn’t stretch out wide and strong, any later and it would crumble and give way to despair. A humble heart will always see God, it’s just a matter of time, his time! Thanks for sharing your faith, it’s meant a lot to me over these last weeks of trusting what I couldn’t see.

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

You are right, Beck – a small word with a huge meaning. Our former pastor used to say, “God is never late, but He sure misses a lot of opportunities to be early.” Of course, he knew that God’s timing is always perfect, but in our minds we often think He could have acted sooner.

Hi Joan – God always come through in some way, shape or form. Its the trusting and faith to hold on until His timing. Great encouraging post. From one sparrow to another :)
    God bless

Thank you, Tracy. As I just replied to Beck, His timing is always perfect.

Hi Joan, I loved your posting. It reminded me of a similar experience I had a couple of years ago, I had become ill and had been struggling with my faith because I couldn’t understand how I could cry and cry and pray and pray and God wouldn’t hear or help me. Like you I felt that God certainly didn’t care about me or He would answer me.

It was one sunday on the way to a local church that my husband and I saw a small chick lying on the ground, it could barely move only to lift its head. We looked up and saw a tree and a nest, the mum was there but seemed to not care that her child had fallen. We knew we couldn’t leave the chick there because it could get trampled on or eaten by a cat, so we gently picked it up and placed it in our upside down umbrella (it was raining) and took it back home.

While we were at home, my husband phoned the rspca and I covered the small bird with a tea cloth and fed it some water from a spoon. Soon enough it fell asleep, obviously feeling safe and warm. A few hours later the RSPCA lady came and took the chick away.

Later on my husband then mentioned the above scripture, he told me that if I could care for a hurting bird why wouldn’t God also care for His child who is in pain. Like you i believe God placed the chick there as a lesson for me, God showed His love for the chick by sending us to care for and preserve its life and He has continuously shown His love for me throughout my healing journey. I think sometimes it takes us to experience being the one who does the giving anfd loving to see how fully god cares for all He creates.

Florence – I just love those “God moments”. He will use whatever means necessary to teach us. If he can use a donkey to speak to Balem, He can use little birds to teach us.

      Blessings….

I could have written this post myself though not so well. I totally understand the “Lord, don’t you care?” lamentation. (I’ve also done that Bible study. Liked it!)

I cried out to God recently. Not in those words, but a cry nonetheless. I got an answer from Him in a surprising way.

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

Debbie – sometimes His answers surprise us, but He always knows best. Although I sometimes find myself wanting to ask, “are you sure, Lord?”

  • Jenifer

Oh I love that we can cast our cares on Him. Even when we don’t feel it, He does care for us.

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

Jenifer – it is comforting to know that we can bring every concern before His throne.

God’s timing can be difficult to understand sometimes, but we can trust that it is always perfect! He is indeed the God who provides!

    Blessings to you this Thursday!

So true, Joan and He has proven Himself over and over to me.

Joan, God is good and He’s always on time, isn’t He! Thank you so much for being vulnerable to share what all of us feel at some time or another. God will continue to bless you as you walk this journey of faith with Him!
    Blessings,
    ~Erin

Thank you, Erin. One thing I want to do here is to be open and honest. I never want to set myself up as being “all together”. I’m on a journey and I struggle along the way, but it’s in what I call those “valley times” when I have experienced the greatest Spiritual growth.

  • Deb

Thank you so much for allowing me to join the rest of these special ladies. I found you thru Shanda at A Pause on the Path. I’m also following you!

Deb – I am so glad you joined us and hope you will come again!

Birds are often a confirmation of God’s Love. I remember when a small bird flew into our sanctuary one Sunday and then left as quickly as it had arrived. It was a sign that God cares for the birds and that He truely cares for us.

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

Hazel – that is so true, He loves and cares for us so much and He knows just how to cofirm that to us when we doubt.

  • Renee

Beautiful story of God’s faithfulness in providing for us. My husband’s words “God will provide” have echoed in my ears for over 4o years…and He always does!

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

Renee – I like the verse found in Psalm 37:25, “I have been young, and now am old, yet I have not seek the righteous forsaken or his children begging for bread.”

Not one bird falls but that the Lord knows about it. He cares for the sparrows and He cares for YOU and ME.

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

Amen, Nancy. Even when we doubt, we can pause, and rest in the assurance of His love and care.

  • Anne
