Beyond Understanding

in 30 Days of Thanksgiving,Grace Café

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7)

Sometimes it is easier said than done when we read the words “do not be anxious about anything.” Certainly it is easy to say those words to others when they are facing a crisis, but not so when we are in the midst of a trial. When we receive a bad health report, disturbing news regarding a loved one, or when faced with job loss or other problems, our first reaction is usually to worry.

I have never been in a hurricane, but in the eye, or very center of the storm, there is calm. It’s almost impossible to imagine with a storm capable of widespread destruction.

There have been times in my own life when facing a major storm, that I felt peace. In recalling two particular incidents, I first had great anxiety. However, when I prayed and poured out my heart to God, thanking Him for his grace, mercy, power, and might, peace flooded my soul.  I didn’t know what the outcome of either situation would be, but I knew that whatever happened, the Lord was near, He was in control, and He would never leave me. Though the storm raged, I felt safe, secure, and calm in His loving arms.

I am thankful that we serve a God capable of calming the mightiest of storms. He doesn’t always take us around the storm, but gives us peace through them. When we come to Him in prayer and make our requests known to Him, He gives us peace. Peace beyond understanding.

Father, I thank you for hearing the prayers of your children. We thank you that we can experience peace—even in the midst of the mightiest storms. It is comforting to know that we can call on you in times of distress and have assurance that you hear our prayers and petitions. In Jesus name, amen.

For me, it has been like a baby walking – not the trusting but trusting in peace, not grieving but allowing myself that peace!

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

I agree – it is baby steps and the more we walk with Christ and deepen our relationship, the more we will realize His peace.

Peace…what a beautiful gift. In my life, peace was something that eluded me …but, as my relationship with my Father has deepened, peace has become more and more a part of my life. The more we trust him, the more precious the peace.

    Beautiful words, Joan~

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

Stacy – you are right, as our relationship with Him grows, so does our peace.

      Blessings…

In the middle of the storm, in the eye of the hurricane! WOW that peace is what I want to strive for – or perhaps just lay back and rest!

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

Hazel – you touched on a good point…rest! Resting in the Lord, knowing we are safe in His loving arms.

  • http://www.sharonsharinggod.blogspot.com Sharon

Beautiful, comforting words. I think that there is peace in the eye of the storm because His eye is on every storm that comes into one’s life. I have trouble feeling that assurance in the middle of my raging emotions sometimes, but I believe it with my whole heart.

Thanks, Joan – for this very good message. I am always encouraged when I stop by here for a cup of grace.

    GOD BLESS!

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

Thank you, Sharon. I am likewise encouraged when I come to your blog. That’s what the body of Christ should do…encourage and lift one another up.

Hi Joan – I want you to know that in joining with you for the 30 days of thanksgiving has given my attitude an upgrade, shall we say. I’m grateful for the encouragement. I’m grateful for you.
    God bless
    Tracy

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

Tracy – I’m so glad. I try to take each negative situation and look for the positive in it. (I don’t always do a good job.) Turning our hearts toward thanks really helps my sometimes negative attitude.

      Blessings…

I TOO am thankful for His peace! It is so hard to remember that He will give me that peace in the midst of that storm…once in the ugliest of situations, through a downpour of my tears I heard the words “peace like a river running” which I then did research for bible verses and song lyrics! When I stay connected to Jesus as my life jacket He does fill me with peace that passes all understanding! It is amazing! Our God is an awesome God!
    Thank you for your reminder!
    God Bless,
    Brandi

I like what you said about Jesus as being our life jackets. Without Him, having this kind of peace is impossible.

I’ve decided this morning…right here and now, to start memorizing that verse.
Thank you for the inspiration, Joan

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

Anita – this verse has meant so much to me throughout many trials in my life.

What a beautiful devotional to start my day with. I have been in the eye of a typhoon…more than one in fact when we lived in the Philippine Islands so many years ago. If we can stay in the center of calm that God provides and promises for us, we can have an inner sense of calm like you say. Beautifully said as usual, Joan.

      Thank you, Renee.

I wrote recently about the first time I really understood that “peace which passes understanding” part. I truly believe that we “get” that one in the middle of the storm that he doesn’t quiet. If I didn’t have the storm or the fear or anxiety, I don’t think I would really understand the peace.

It’s something that the world just can’t counterfeit, isn’t it?

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

Debbie – you are right, the world can’t counterfeit nor can it understand. It’s only through a personal relationship with Christ and the indwelling Holy Spirit that we can know that peace.

I was in a hurricane as a child, the eye of the storm is stunning in it’s calm after the fury of the winds, great illustration. Isn’t it amazing that all of our need can be met by calling on the goodness of God for us. I love that prayer turns God’s ear to our hearts but more importantly it turns our heart to God’s. Great post Joan!

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

Very important point, Beck – turning our hearts to God’s.

      Blessings….

That photo is amazing! It is such an awesome thing when God calms a raging storm in our hearts! And thank you Jesus for sending the Holy Spirit to us to serve as our comforter.:)

Yes, I am thankful for the Holy Spirit. God did not leave us unprepared to face the storms that come upon us.

Praise God for the peace that passes all understanding. If we have faith that He works all things together for good for those who love Him (Romans 8:28), we can have peace and joy even in the trials. Thank you for the inspiring post.
