He Provides

Jesus then took the loaves, and when he had given thanks, he distributed them to those who were seated. So also the fish, as much as they wanted. And when they had eaten their fill, he told his disciples, “Gather up the leftover fragments, that nothing may be lost.” So they gathered them up and filled twelve baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves left by those who had eaten. (John 6:11-13)

My grandfather was a textile worker struggling to provide for a family of seven during the Great Depression. When doctors diagnosed one of the children with scarlet fever, they quarantined the family. With my grandfather not being able to work, it put an even greater strain on the family.

One night, the family sat down to a meal of cornbread and maple syrup. It was the only food in the house and there was no money to buy more. As was his custom, my grandfather gave thanks before each meal. On this night, he said, “Children, I wish we had more to eat, but we are going to give thanks anyway.”

The family bowed their heads while he blessed the food. During the prayer, someone knocked at the door. When he finished praying, Papaw instructed my mother (who was the oldest child) to answer. She opened the door to see three or four men from their church. Their arms were laden with sacks of groceries and even though a quarantined notice was on the door, they were not afraid to enter.

Several members of the church came together to provide for a family in need. Times were difficult and I’m sure these people also struggled to provide for their families. No doubt, God blessed them for their generosity just as He did the churches in Macedonia. We want you to know, brothers, about the grace of God that has been given among the churches of Macedonia, for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part. For they gave according to their means, as I can testify, and beyond their means, of their own accord…(2 Corinthians 8:1-3)

When Jesus fed the 5000, he did so miraculously. While He is still able to do that today, but He has also called us to be His hands and feet. My prayer is that I am always ready to answer His call.

Father, I admit that both in times of need and times of plenty I have not been generous. I have been fearful that you would not provide – even though you have proved to be my provider many times over. I ask for your forgiveness and I pray for discernment when you call upon me to help with the needs of others. I thank you for being my provider . In Jesus name, amen.

What a sweet story. I do believe that the more we give, the more God blesses.

I agree, Shanda and God has proven that in my own life.

Your post is a confirmation to what I know to be true! Just today I talking with my husband about How God always provides. We’ve had some car trouble (it seems to be ongoing!) and are able to pay for the repairs, but it gets so frustrating while trying to save, you know? But, I was praying for peace for my husband and myself regarding this and then I read your post! Thank you for your gentle reminder!

    Blessings, Joan

Joan, you know how I have shared about our tough times, yet God always provided and saw us through them. Sometimes I have questioned why certain things had to happen, especially when trying to save to become debt free. (Remember my story of the car?) Anyway, I believe He allows these things to strengthen our faith, so that we will see what a mighty and powerful God we serve.

Jehovah-Jireh, the Lord will provide. Time and time again…

    Beautiful words, Joan.

May our faith be unmoved and may our hands always pass on the blessings-

Stacy – he has proved to be my provider over and over. It hurts my heart that Ihave doubted, but when I do I am trusting in my flesh and not The Provider.

What an inheritance that story is. I think because in our nation, we a free to make choices on how we spend our money, how we live our faith – that is why we are the most generous nation on earth – because Christians give by chosing to be Christ-like:) What an awesome story!

As Christians, we should be generous and we can’t outgive God. He will always provide our needs.

God provides for his children. He even feeds the hungry who do not know him. I had tears as I read your lovely story and give thanks to the Lord for his daily provision.

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

Hazel – thank you for your kind words. I too am grateful for His provisions.

What a wonderful story, Joan! I know that you know it because it has been told and retold. I think that the first thing that we should remember about God’s great mercy and provision is that it is THERE still today. The second is that it is often through us that He does it. And the third? Tell the story!

Debbie – this story meant so much to me when my husband and I were going through a difficult time. Although we were never that destitude, I kept remembering how God provided for my mom’s family.

Hi Joan – your prayer at the end is so heart-stopping, because it could be my prayer. Great testimony. God’s generosity knows no bounds. God bless

Tracy – that is right, He is generous beyond our imaginations and our understanding.

Hi Joan, What a beautiful story testifying to God’s provision! Psalm 37:25 tells us: “I have been young, and now am old; yet have I not seen the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging bread.” You can’t outgive God! Our late pastor used to say that God will give more things through you than He will to you. One of my daily prayers is to be a channel through whom His blessings flow.

Laurie – I’ve always loved that verse from Psalms. Dallas Holm, one of the early pioneers of Christian contemporary music wrote a song based on that scripture.

I agree, we can’t outgive God.

I loved your story and ending prayer, also…we KNOW what God can do…we have SEEN it with our own eyes….yet at times we still hold back….Lord help my unbelief…

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

Karen – I’ve prayed that several times, “help my unbelief.” Blessings…
