Mary ~ The Obedient One

And Jacob the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom Jesus was born, who is called Christ. (Matthew 1:16)

Mary is the fifth and last woman named in Matthew’s account of the genealogy of Jesus. She was probably no more than a teenager, a virgin, betrothed to a man named Joseph who was from the lineage of David. Yet her age did not matter to God, as He chose her to be the mother of the Christ Child.

By Jewish custom, a betrothal was more than an engagement and betrothed couples were referred to as husband and wife, although they were not yet considered to be married. Sexual unfaithfulness during the betrothal was considered adultery and under Mosaic law, a person could be stoned to death.

When the angel Gabriel visited Mary and told her what was to come, she said, “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word.”  (Luke 1:38a) Mary knew the potential consequences, yet she willingly obeyed.

These five women, Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, Bathsheba, and Mary were not perfect. Incest, prostitution, ethnic group, adultery, age—none of this mattered, because each one of them had faith and believed in the One True God. And their descendent, Jesus, came as the Savior of them all. He came to save me, He came to save you. Believe in Him.

And they said, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved, you and your household.” (Acts 16:31)

It often takes courage to trust God, but when we do, we are always blessed! Mary was a brave woman! She was young, yet, her obedience gave her an honor above all other women!

I wrote a post last year called Radical Obedience. Mary was indeed honored because of her obedience.

I love that the Lord picks *imperfect* people to do His work – (I would certainly fit into that category!) But, as you have pointed out with these five women from Jesus’ ancestry, obedience is the key.

May the Lord help me to be courageous, and to follow where He leads. Yes, Lord, let it be to me according to YOUR Word.

    GOD BLESS!

Sharon if He only picked perfect people, we would have no need of Him. I’m praying that same prayer along with you.

So much we can learn from these “normal,” imperfect women. . . . love how you’re encouraging me to reflect on that. thank you!

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

Yes Nikki – we can learn so much from them.

Mary was not the talkative type. She pondered a lot of things about Jesus in her heart. We probably can follow her example and think before we speak. hummmm

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

That is an excellent idea, Robert.

love this Joan…..because we’re all special and worth it to Him…..each one of us…..no matter who we are or the things we’ve done or not done. Love covers everything. Have a great day out there. Nikki

Hi Nikki – yes it is not because of us, but because of what He did for us.

I love that Mary was willing to do God’s will knowing society would condemn, that she really couldn’t explain herself believably – was willing to walk through that battle of injustice condemned. I’m always wanting justice to prevail – and I’m learning sometimes worldly justice just isn’t in the plan!

    Wonderful thoughts, Joan!

Oh that I would be as obediant as Mary.

We must continue to respect and honor Mary for being willing to become the vessel used by God to bring forth Jesus into this world. She was blessed among women!

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

Indeed she was, Hazel. Many blessings…

Your blog is a blessing… I love Mary, too… and the reflections you shared about her were just what I needed to read this morning. As Christmas nears, I am asking God to give me the heart of Mary… a heart of simple trust, a heart of simple obedience.

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

Lidia – that is my prayer also. Blessings…

Joan I take it your Christmas was a beautiful one. I love these women of the bible. They were so strong willed and so encouraging. I love reading their stories. Thank you for this beautiful share.

Anne – we can learn much from studying the women (and men) of the Bible. Blessings…
