Waiting

I believe there is no such thing as an unanswered prayer. When we present our requests to God, He always answers. Sometimes He answers yes, sometimes the answer is no, and many times the answer comes in a way in which we would have never perceived. However, there are times when God says, “wait.”

Those times are the hardest. I am often guilty wanting the Lord to answer my prayers “yesterday.” However, the consequences of not waiting upon the Lord can be dire.

I have been studying about King Saul in my daily bible reading. Saul started out well—in fact, he was rather humble when he first met Samuel. Saul answered, “Am I not a Benjaminite, from the least of the tribes of Israel? And is not my clan the humblest of all the clans of the tribe of Benjamin? Why then have you spoken to me in this way?” (1 Samuel 9:21)

Two years into Saul’s kingdom, the Philistines made war with Israel.  Saul was in Gilgal where Samuel told him to wait there seven days. When Samuel did not come at the appointed time, Saul became fearful and unlawfully offered a sacrifice to God. Immediately after Saul offered the sacrifice, Samuel appeared.

And Samuel said to Saul, “You have done foolishly. You have not kept the command of the LORD your God, with which he commanded you. For then the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel forever. But now your kingdom shall not continue. The LORD has sought out a man after his own heart, and the LORD has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the LORD commanded you.” (1 Samuel 13:13-14)

Saul lost a kingdom because he didn’t wait. What things might we lose by not waiting for God’s timing? One of the things that struck me when I read this passage is that Samuel appeared the moment Saul finished offering the sacrifice. I have found that many times, God answers my prayers at what seems like the last moment.

Waiting is never easy, but God’s timing and His answers are always best.

But they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. (Isaiah 40:31)

    Hi Joan,
This touched me. Waiting is so hard, and I find myself wondering if I’m supposed to be waiting, or if the answer was no and I won’t accept it. It’s hard to know, and I can get anxious. It’s so important to be in God’s Word and spend quiet time with Him, otherwise I might miss His answers and run ahead only to mess it all up.

Thank you for this beautiful reminder!
    In Christ,
    Laura

I recall a certain incident that happened to me several years ago. I kept thinking a door was “swinging” – not yet open, but not really closed. As I waited, I discovered the door had been closed, but God opened another that was much better. I’m thankful to have waited.

    Joan,
I needed to read your post today. Thank you. I enjoyed reading this story through your perspective.
when I think back on all the times God has asked me to wait, I see how much I grew closer to Him as a result. I am in a time of waiting right now–of being stretched. I’m not going to lie…it’s tiring.
But what a blessing it is….to know I’m worth the effort that He would take time to refine me.
    To God be the glory.
    Blessings to you,
    Nikki

I have also found that those times of waiting draw me closer to Him. It isn’t easy, but worth it in the long run.

Waiting is difficult and we usually “Want it NOW.” God’s timing is best in the long run!!

      Amen, Robert.

I just got up from my Bible reading and prayer time (rose early today, couldn’t sleep well). I loved this so much that now I’m heading back to read that passage. I’ve been in a huge wait mode for months now. We’re beginning to see the fruit of our waiting, and it is (as always) better than it would have been had I proceeded forth on my own.

    Heading to Samuel now…

Those long waits are the toughest, but I have found that God often answers in what seems like the last minute. He always comes through!

Yes what a wonderful question …. knowing with clear evidence many things, many glorious things I could have experienced if I had but waited! Truly a hard thing to do when the energy level is maxed and every bone in your body wants to “run”….but you hear this tiny voice within, you know the one that can move a mountain, saying “wait”…..! I really enjoyed visiting your blog this morning…thanks for the inspiration and reminder to wait upon the Lord ….

Waiting is never easy, but we can trust that God hears us and will answer in His perfect time. Great encouragement!

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

I agree, Jenifer. He always hears our prayers and answers in His time.

    Joan,
This really hit home with me. So often, when it appears God is doing nothing, we decide to step in and do it our self only to discover God knows best and His ways are so much wiser than our own. I think God is trying to teach me to trust…..and, yes, wait.

I always leave here blessed. Thank you-
    ~Stacy

Thank you, Stacy. Too many times I have stepped out without waiting and suffered the consequences.

I agree — the waiting is the most difficult! However, God does always answer prayer and He answers at the perfect time. He sees more than we do – He sees the entire picture. It is so important to trust Him for His timing, not our own.

Yes, His timing is always perfect.

Dear Joan, Beautiful, truth-filled post, and exactly what I needed to hear today! Isa. 40:31 is one of our life verses — we have a beautiful picture of an eagle with this verse in our front hall. It’s so tempting to strike out on our own when we’re impatient, but God is saying, in effect, “Don’t just do something, stand there.”
    Love in Him,

Isaiah 40:31 is one of my husband’s favorites.

Even more, I have come to understand that the places where God grants prayer are at those intersections of His will and ours. When we come on board, He can open his arms.

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

I agre, JoAnne. He longs to give us the desires of our hearts as long as those desires coincide with His desires for us.

Joan, Our Pastor spoke of Saul and David this last week. One had a deep abiding relationship the other was acquainted with the Lord.
I love how you said that the Lord answers prayers at sometimes the last moment. Isn’t it funny, our last moments are in His perfect timing?

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

Good point, Nona. Saul’s relationship was a superficial knowledge.

  • Hazel Moon

Yes, no or wait awhile – two out of three are not answers I like to hear. Waiting is not my style.

    • http://www.reflectionsofhisgrace.com Joan

I agree, Hazel. Patience is not one of my strengths.
